Meet our featured employee of the month, Gavin McKellar.
Gavin was born and grew up in Bo’ness, a small town around 20 miles outside of Edinburgh in Scotland. He undertook all his education in Scotland and went on the earn a Bachelor of Science in Topographic Science from the University of Glasgow. As a recent graduate, Gavin took a job at a local surveying company, which is where his surveying career began to flourish.
In 2001, Gavin’s wife was offered an academic research position in San Diego, California, it was a great opportunity that couldn’t be passed up, so shortly afterwards they relocated to the US. Before long, Gavin was back surveying and has built up over 20 years of survey experience, working on small- and large-scale projects for private, public, utility and government clients.
Gavin has been with GIS Surveyors for three and a half years. As the lead Chief of Survey Parties, he oversees field crews, surveying and processing data. He is also responsible for ensuring the crews have up to date training, such as safety and working procedures and processes. Additionally, Gavin’s survey experience has allowed him to learn and become proficient in survey hardware and software, GPS and terrestrial measurement methods enabling him to produce high quality GIS or CAD deliverables. Gavin says the best thing about his job is working with the newest technologies on a wide variety of projects with a great team.
Gavin and his wife became US citizens earlier this year and continue to enjoy life stateside with their young daughter. Outside of work Gavin enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, photography and fishing.
